Virginia Craft Beer Month Day 1: Tasting Notes: Alewerks Tavern Ale

Alewerks Tavern Ale (Williamsburg, VA)
http://williamsburgalewerks.com/
Style: American Brown Ale
ABV:  5.6%
Aroma:
There is a nice nose on this beer, nutty with slight chocolate and biscuit notes.  Hop aroma is present, coming across as somewhat earthy with a hint of citrus.

Appearance:
The beer pours a crystal clear medium brown, with some dark orange hue's around the edges. It shows a fairly thin head, but it lingers for quite some time.

Flavor:
The flavor follows along well with the aroma.  Nutty, biscuity, and chocolate malty notes that balance nicely with an earthy hop flavor.

Mouthfeel:
The beer is medium bodied and relatively dry on the finish.  Carbonation levels seem just about right.

While Brown Ales (both the English and American varieties) are not usually my favorite style, on occasion a well crafted brown is just right.  Tavern Ale fits well in the Alewerks lineup, filling the gap between their Chesapeake Pale Ale and Washington's Porter.
